Race: Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube

Date: Sunday, March 7, 2021 at 3:30 PM EST

So, let’s start at the top, where Chase Elliott’s odds to win the Bank of America Roval 400 make him the favorite at +250. Elliott won last year’s edition of this race and finished 6th in 2018. With little form to go on, his average finish of 3.50 from two starts in this one pits him as the leader of the pack.

NASCAR heads to Las Vegas this weekend for the Pennzoil 400 Presented by Jiffy Lube. Will we see another surprise win? It's a possibility as we've had three so far. The Dixie Vodka 400 winner, William Byron, might have been one of the most surprising out of the them given the fact this was a 1.5 mile oval that is generally won by the more experienced drivers.

We would suspect the Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube will be similar in that we do not expect a big surprise. That said, anything can happen as proven by the previous races of the season. The reason this race will be more difficult to win for some of the underdogs is that this track in Las Vegas is an intermediate tri-oval track where the previous winners have generally been drivers for top teams, and are considered more 'elite'.

We don't know why this season has been the way it is. It could be the lack of practice at these tracks that is leading to more upsets. One thing we do know is that it will be another action packed weekend for the NASCAR Cup Series.

Dixie Vodka 400 Results

This race started off in a strange fashion as Denny Hamlin was sent to the back of the field before the race after being penalized for an unapproved adjustment. This meant that his teammate, Christopher Bell, would take his spot in the front row. Joey Logano would take the pole position in this race, but would lose the lead to Brad Keselowski. Keselowski would then go back and forth with Chris Buescher for the lead, with Buescher taking the first stage.

Coming out of pit road, Chase Elliott took the lead to start the second stage, but wasn't able to hold onto that for long as Chris Buescher came back to grab the lead. He held the lead until just after the green flag pitstops where Martin Truex Jr. grabbed the lead. After Corey LaJoie's car went down, it was a mad dash for the stage and William Byron ended up edging out Hamlin and Truex for the honor.

Byron led the field back to the green for the final stage of the race and never looked back. He lost the lead for a short stint after a caution flag came out for debris, but ended up taking the lead back and winning the race.

2020 Cup Series Standings Update

The win for William Byron propelled him to the 13th spot with 76 points on the season. He still has some work to do, but is looking good. He also has the second most laps led with 102, which is only 1 back from points leader Denny Hamlin. The top 5 in points are Denny Hamlin (139), Kevin Harvick (119), Joey Logano (108), Michael McDowell (106) and Chase Elliott with 105 points.

While Joey Logano looks like a great pick for this race with a solid win history in Las Vegas, he had a rough go last weekend. We like Martin Truex Jr. in this one. While he doesn't have as many top 5 and top 10 finishes as Brad Keselowski or Logano, he is one of the most consistent racers on this track with a top 20 finishing rate of 94.44%.

Guy's Pick: Martin Truex Jr. - (+600)

Who is going to win the 2021 Pennzoil 400?

HARVICK (+650) is on the pole and looking for his first victory at the track since the spring 2018 race. He also won the Kobalt 400 during the 2015 season when the NASCAR Cup Series ran just once per season at the track.

Penske Racing has dominated at this track, winning three of the past five NASCAR Cup races at LVMS. BRAD KESELOWSKI (+650) leads all active drivers with three checkered flags.

Keselowski not only has the three victories, but he has seven top-5 runs with 10 top-10 finishes and 282 laps led in 15 career starts. He also has an 11.4 AFP, which is third-best among drivers with at least 10 starts at the track.

Logano is the gold standard, even though he has just two victories. He has consistently ticked off top-10 finishes, and he has never finished lower than 23rd at this particular track.

If you want to look outside of the Penske stable of racers, KYLE LARSON (+1000) is your best bet. He has never won at the Nevada tri-oval, but he has three top-5 showings with six top-10 runs and a strong 10.78 AFP in his nine career starts in Vegas.

2021 Pennzoil 400 long-shot bet

Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval 400

AUSTIN DILLON (+5500) has appeared on this long-shot section before.

Normally, he is a stud on the superspeedways, but he is worth a small-unit play in Las Vegas. He has two top-5 runs, and he has finished 20th or better in eight of his 11 career starts at the track. That’s good consistency, and a jump to the top of the leaderboard isn’t that big of a stretch.

MATT DIBENEDETTO (+3000) is still searching for his first-ever NASCAR Cup Series win, and in a season of first-time winners so far, why not Matty B? He has always been strong in Las Vegas, going for two top-5 finishes and an 18.6 AFP in his eight career starts. He was a runner-up last February at this race, and expectations are rather high.
